Summer 2022
Read MoreI love waterfalls - the sound they make, the way they fall over the rocks and sometimes are misty and ethereal and ohter times powerful and in total command. As a photographer I work at creating an image that will evoke an emotion and with this one I saw power, strength and some playfullness to the water by slecting a shuter speed that shows all 3 things
Loon in the Early Morning Mist
Fog blanketed the pond when I arrived at first light and as I paddled the perimeter of the pond it was quiet and mysterious.. Out of the fog I saw a sleeping loon which quickly woke up. and just watched as I paddled by.
Loon parents will feed their chick and then go off to forage for themselves. This time both parents swam right up to my kayak and passed within reach of my paddle - accessing the danger or perhaps saying - hey you're in charge now - either way the chick is left alone. I am very careful to keep my distance so I don't stress the birds. This chick is probably a week old. It's diving on it's own but still riding on it's parents back when it gets tired or cold. This is taken with a very long lens and then the image is cropped alot!
I never tire of watching bald eagles and it's always a treat to witness and photograph one catching a fish. They are fast, powerful and determined in their fishing. This was from a long ways away using an Olympus Micro Four Thirds Camera - 100-400 lens with a 1.4 teleconverter which gave me a reach of 1120mm! All the while standing on a dock at one of the lake!
Loon Chick Riding on Parents Back
During the first week of so of a loon chicks life they will often ride on the parents back It helps keep them warm and safe and if t hey get tired it's the perfect resting spot. Note the red eye of the parent loon - the sun needs to be low in the sky to get that color in the eye. This was taken early morning - 6:30 am in late June.
